Laurier West neighborhood is a perfect microcosm of what the city of Montreal has to offer; a diverse mix of food, shopping, culture and language. Residential streets serving vibrant communities thread together the major streets which intersect with each other to create a local and international commercial marketplace. With an active website and social media presence, the community is connected all the way from the sidewalk to the screen. It is an area of the city where information is readily available. However, when road construction threatened the prosperous community culture, the City of Montreal sought to help people in the neighborhood understand what was going on, while encouraging them to enjoy the area nonetheless with a playful and informative addition on the streets.
Three info-photo kiosks were designed and set up along a stretch of Laurier West between Hutchison and Bloomfield streets, where the road work is heaviest. Following the project requirements set out by the City of Montreal and Jack World, who conceived the idea and designed the physical kiosks, Réalisations provided equipment recommendations and specs for the units’ interior electronics, as well as hardware and software engineering to ensure that the technical components run smoothly.
The touch-screen kiosks provide a variety of information about the neighborhood during the construction period including; notices, maps and other news. The final component is a departure from the information-based content, which invites users to have their photo taken. The kiosks are equipped with two front-facing cameras (to accommodate different heights), and playful filters with the option to share snapshots via email as a souvenir.
The kiosks offer an interactive way to engage people on the streets while providing helpful information during construction. Réalisations is proud to have collaborated on a project which will serve this local community to maintain prosperous commerce and community spirit while doubling as a form of light-hearted interactive entertainment during the construction period.
Réalisations would like to thank Jack World for the opportunity to have collaborated on this project.
